Description
No. 16 Gentleman's Walk is a bank building constructed in 1924 by architect Henry Munro Cautley, with an extension added in 1925 into Davey Place. The building is made of Portland stone and features slate and flat roofs, situated on a corner site. It has six major bays, one minor bay to the left, and a corner bay to the right. The entrances at the corner and end are framed with bolection bead and rod surrounds, topped with a lintel that has a figure-head keystone supported on scrolls. Above this lintel is a cartouche held up by putti.
The ground floor is adorned with metal casement windows that include margin lights and flat arches decorated with bead and rod detailing. Beneath the semi-circular arched windows on the first floor are recessed panels, with scrolled keystones and festoons in the spandrels. The top floor features square casement windows, and glazing bars are present throughout the building. Heavy panelled pilasters separate the bays, with a simple frieze between the first and second floors. The building is topped with a ziggurat cornice that includes lion masks and a fascia motif, and the windows above the passage are surrounded by rusticated hollow chamfer detailing.
