Description
No. 40 Elm Hill is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates back to the 17th century, although the exterior was entirely rebuilt in the 20th century. The building is rendered throughout, with painted brick on the ground floor to the right. It features a plain tile roof with two brick ridge chimneys. The left side has two storeys with a first-floor jetty and four irregular first-floor windows, while the right side has three storeys with one first-floor window. The ground floor includes 20th-century double doors and plate-glass windows, along with a plank door to the left. On the first floor, small casement windows alternate with three projecting mullioned and transomed windows in moulded surrounds. The gable has a casement window, plain barge-boards, and anthropomorphic brackets, all of which are from the 20th century. Inside, there is a 17th-century moulded wall-plate above the 20th-century shop windows.
