Description

Nos. 67A, 67B, 67C, and 68 on The Close are a Grade II* listed building, originally the Organist's House, now divided into a school building and houses. The structure dates back to the 15th century, with alterations and extensions from the 17th century. It is constructed of flint with brick and stone dressings and features a low-pitch lead roof.

The building has two storeys. Nos. 67A and 67B have a left-hand off-centre door with a 19th-century brick reveal, accompanied by one three-light and one single-light window to the left of the door. The first floor has two widely spaced stone windows, each with three lights and cusped arches within a square frame.

No. 67C has a symmetrical off-centre facade with a two-light stone window on the first floor to the right. It features three bays, with a central door that has brick reveals. Sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick segmental arches are present throughout, along with a blocked stair window at the extreme right.

No. 68 displays scattered fenestration of sash and casement windows. It has a left-hand off-centre doorway with pilasters topped with a triglyph and a reeded architrave, set in a single-storey projecting bay with a crenellated parapet. A lamp-bracket is positioned above the door.

At the rear, there is a left-hand extension to No. 68, built in the 19th century, faced with flint and featuring brick bands and quoins. This extension is two storeys plus a semi-basement, with sash windows throughout. Notable features include a re-used cusped arch at the basement level and a re-used moulded two-centre arch in the wall to the left of No. 68.
