Description
This is a former house, now a hostel, dating back to the 15th century with 19th-century alterations. The building's significance is largely due to its 15th-century undercroft. The hostel itself is constructed of red brick with a black pantile roof. It is three storeys high, with seven bays visible on the main facade, and an additional bay on the right-hand side. The central three bays project and are topped with a triangular pediment. The main entrance features a four-panel door with a rectangular fanlight containing decorative metalwork. Fluted Tuscan columns and pilasters support a frieze incorporating alternating triglyphs and metopes. Sash windows with glazing bars are present throughout, set within rubbed brick flat arches; the ground-floor windows in the side bays are recessed with semi-circular arches above. A block modillion cornice runs along the top. The later bay on the right was once the entrance to a lecture hall and gymnasion, as indicated by a plaque above the doorway. A first-floor bay window is also present. The undercroft, dating from the 15th century and built of brick, is located beneath the right-hand half of the building, extending parallel to the street. It has two bays, each defined by heavy double order diagonal ribs and lighting niches. The building is designated as a Grade II* listed building specifically for the undercroft, which contributes to an important group of structures within the City Walls.
