Description

42 and 44 St Giles Street comprise a former house, now shops, dating to the late 17th century. The building was altered and refaced in the 19th century, with 18th-century additions to the rear. The facade is rendered, and the roof is covered with pantiles. The building is two storeys high with seven first-floor windows. There are two off-centre doors, the one on the right featuring a moulded surround and a flat hood supported by consoles. A shopfront is located on the left side, with a central recessed door and an Adam motif in the top lights. A casement window between the doors also has a similar Adam toplight. Throughout, the windows are sash windows with glazing bars in simple reveals. A plain ironwork balcony extends across the four left-hand windows. A parapet tops the building, and four gabled dormers are visible, each containing a sash window. Inside, the rear first floor contains fine 18th-century panelling and a fireplace surround.
