Description
This is a former house, now a hostel, dating from the 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered brickwork with a plinth. The roof is not visible. It is three storeys high and five bays wide. The central entrance features a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight incorporating metalwork tracery in an Adam style, flanked by attached fluted columns supporting a frieze and a simple hood. Sash windows are present throughout, with raised and moulded timber surrounds on the ground floor and simpler timber surrounds on the first and second floors. A block modillion cornice runs along the top of the building. Beneath the main structure, and partly damaged by a 19th-century cellar, are the brick wall piers of a 15th-century undercroft. The building is designated Grade II* for the significance of these undercroft remains, which are an important part of the city walls group.
