Description
The National Westminster Bank is a bank building located at 45 to 51 London Street, designed in 1924 by architects F.C.R. Palmer and W.F.C. Holden. It is constructed of stone and features a flat roof on a triangular corner site. The building is single storey with an attic storey facing London Street, comprising five bays. The Bedford Street side has two bays plus a rounded corner bay and a five-bay extension added in the late 20th century.
The entry facade has classical detailing, featuring a central door with a moulded surround, a keystone, and a pediment supported by consoles. There are semi-circular steps leading up to the door, with large sash windows on either side, each having a moulded surround and hood. The facade is supported by four composite columns that hold up a full-width pediment. The attic storey includes turned balustrades and two urns, while a central domed cupola topped with a wind-vane adds to the building's character. Inside, there is fine detail, highlighted by a large central roof light.
