Description

Christ Church is a parish church dating to 1872, designed by J.H. Brown and J.B. Pearce and constructed by J.W. Lacey, with completion in 1879. A south aisle was added in 1912 by J.E. Burton and a porch in 1913 by E. Buckingham. The church is built of knapped flint with bath stone dressings and red brick bands, covered by a slate roof. It follows an aisled cruciform plan with a pentangular chancel apse. The north aisle has two-light windows with geometrical tracery, while the west window is a four-light design. The east window is of Perpendicular style, and similar windows are found in the south aisle. Round clerestory windows are present. A belfry is situated above the south transept. Internally, the nave, which consists of four bays and a crossing, features an arcade of two-centred arches supported by round piers (on the north side) and octagonal piers (on the south side). These piers display highly stylised Romanesque details, with particularly fine carving on the north capitals. The roof is arch-and scissor-braced, resting on foliated corbels. Fragments of 15th-century glass are incorporated into the porch window.
