Description
Eaton War Memorial is a First World War memorial constructed in 1921, with additions commemorating the Second World War. It is located to the south of Newmarket Road, within a semicircular enclosure defined by hedges, open to the north for access.
The memorial is a Blomfield Cross of Sacrifice, a tall Latin cross featuring an inverted bronze sword on its north-facing side. The cross rises from an octagonal plinth on an octagonal base, both set upon a two-stepped octagonal platform. The memorial is constructed from Portland stone. Inscriptions and names are carved in incised lettering on the plinth and base.
The plinth is composed of three tiers; a stepped back upper section, a taller central section, and a moulded foot. The principal inscription, reading anticlockwise from the south-east face, dedicates the memorial “To the Glory of God and in Grateful Memory of those belonging to this Parish who fell in the Great War. 1914-1918.” The names of 107 individuals who died are recorded around the eight faces of the central section of the plinth. A further inscription, also anticlockwise starting at the north-east face, reads “Make them to be Numbered with thy Saints in Glory Everlasting.”
The upper step of the base bears the Second World War dedication with the dates 1939 – 1945 carved into the north face. The names of 33 individuals who died are recorded on four faces of the base, either side of these dates.
