Description

Numbers 31 to 33 on Church Lane in Eaton, Norwich, are a house dating from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations from the late 18th or 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond, with the west facade rendered. The gables have mostly been rebuilt, and it features pantile roofs. There are brick gable end stacks, with the one on the south side rebuilt externally.

The house has a three-cell layout, originally consisting of two heated rooms on each side of the stair and a room behind the stair. There is an off-centre lobby adjacent to the stair entry, with an additional lobby entry against the stack in the southeast corner. The structure is two storeys high, with an attic and cellar.

On the main (west) elevation, there is a blocked off-centre doorway with later doorways on either side. The ground floor has two casements, while the first floor has three casements, all in enlarged openings. There are also two 20th-century dormers. A blocked stack side doorway is present on the east wall, and there is a blind oval window on the north gable. The central stair remains in its original position, although the stackside stair has been cut off beyond the first floor. The building features both ornamented and simpler chamfer stops, and the roof has six bays plus a stack bay with staggered butt purlins.

Additionally, there is an attached boundary wall made of brick and flint, with brick quoins. The building retains its 17th-century plan, which is a type that is not commonly found in Norfolk.
