Description
The Former Girls' High School is located on Market Street and dates from the early 19th century, with an earlier section from the early 18th century. The eastern portion at the back of the courtyard is built of yellow brick and has two storeys, featuring three sash windows on the first floor with glazing bars and a first-floor band. There is a flush bend in place of a cornice below the parapet, and a Greek Doric stucco doorcase adorned with wreaths. The western portion, from the early 18th century, has two storeys and attics, and is rendered and limewashed. It has a steep hipped roof covered with pantiles, two pedimented wood dormer casements, and three sash windows on the first floor to the east, also with glazing bars. A wood doorcase is located near the internal angle where the eastern and western portions meet. The building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 9 (odd) and the former Girls' School.
