Description
The Priory Gatehouse, also known as the Abbey Gatehouse, is a 15th-century structure located at the west end of the Priory Church, facing High Street in Little Walsingham. It is built of flint and rubble, featuring stone dressings. The gatehouse has a large, moulded four-centred archway, which is complemented by two tall niches above it, with three panels in between that contain shields. Inside the archway, there is a smaller four-centred arch with large oak doors. The original interior was vaulted, but it now has a new concrete floor. Above, there is a room that includes an original fireplace and a mullion/transom window with flanking niches. The high flint wall that adjoins the south side facing High Street is constructed with brick and flint at lower levels and features later 19th-century battlements with a bracketed cornice.
