Description
The remains of the former parish church of St Peter and St Paul are a notable example of medieval architecture. The structure includes the tower, south porch, and the connecting west wall. The three-stage octagonal west tower dates from the 11th to 12th century and features flint walls that were rendered around 1982, with iron conglomerate quoins and a string course. The low parapet, made of flint and brick, has been renewed. A stone gargoyle is also present. On the south side, there is a very large conglomerate projecting ledger stone approximately 6 meters high.
The tall narrow archway leading to the former nave is made of conglomerate and has a pointed segmental head. The west window and bell openings feature 2-light cusped Y-tracery, dating from the 13th century. The south porch, which dates from the 14th century, is roofless and constructed of flint with stone dressings. It has a blocked moulded arch with round shafts and two openings of 2 lights, although the tracery has been lost. These openings have brick sills and internal surrounds. There is a continuous moulded area with a hood mould above the south doorway.
The west wall of the south aisle is built of flint and includes a diagonal buttress that incorporates brickwork. There is a large opening under a segmental head, with the tracery having been removed to the new parish church built in 1884. The west nave wall features conglomerate quoins that are not tied into the aisle wall.
