Description

A pair of semi-detached houses built in 1912 by the Parish Council. The houses are constructed of brick with a corrugated tile hipped roof. They are square in plan, with one bay per house and a double depth. A central chimney stack rises between the two houses. A plat band and an oversailing eaves cornice run along the roofline. The ground floor has three-light casement windows with segmental heads, and doors are located on the outer side of each house. Each bay on the first floor has a single three-light casement window. A single-story wash-house range, originally divided, extends to the rear. The houses were originally built on plots of approximately half an acre, costing £150 each. A dispute with the District Council over rate responsibility led to parliamentary questions and a subsequent directive shifting housing responsibility from the Parish to the District. The houses are notable as a rare example of Parish Council housing and pre-1914 local authority housing.
