Description

A pair of semi-detached houses located on Holt Road, Edgefield, built in 1912. The houses are constructed of brick with a corrugated tile hipped roof. Each house has a square plan and a double depth, with one bay per house. A central chimney stack rises between the two properties. They feature a plat band and an oversailing eaves cornice. The ground floor has three-light casement windows with segmental heads, and a door is situated to the outer side of each house. Each bay on the first floor has a single three-light casement window. A single-storey wash-house range, originally divided, extends to the rear and has been extended. The houses were built by the Parish Council, each on approximately half an acre of land, for a cost of £150. The refusal of the District Council to accept responsibility for the additional rates led to parliamentary questions and a directive that housing was a District, not Parish, responsibility. This listing includes the pair as a rare example of Parish Council housing and pre-1914 local authority housing.
