Description
Brownwood is a house dated 1674, located on Hempstead Pond Mills Road. It is constructed of flint with brick dressings and features a pantile roof with gable parapets. The building is a single range with four bays, standing two storeys high with an attic. There is an internal stack on the left gable, and each floor has three 19th-century cross windows that are irregularly spaced.
The house has a flint plinth with a brick cap, a dentil cornice, and oversailing eaves. A central single-storey gabled porch, made of flint and brick with a pantile roof, features a segmental arch in moulded brick beneath a square brick hood mould. The porch has a brick string course, and the archway narrows at the lower part of the jambs. The porch gable displays brick patternwork of zig-zags and lozenges, with ball finials at both the apex and bases.
The left-hand gable showcases a coursed flint and brick mosaic with brick patternwork of hearts and lozenges, along with the date 1674. There are two square openings in the attic with eight radiating brick spokes and blocked oval openings on the ground and first floors to the right. There are 20th-century rear extensions that are of no special interest. The house is attached on the right to farm buildings that have been converted into dwellings.
