Description
The Red House is an early 18th-century farmhouse located in Hempstead. It is constructed of brick with patterned headers, featuring plain tiles on the front and pantiles on the rear. The building is a single range with three bays, standing two storeys high with an attic and cellar. It has gable end stacks with rebuilt shafts and a plinth at the base made of flint, along with a platband and a dentil cornice.
The facade is symmetrical, with a central doorway that includes a porch supported by two columns. The upper parts of the columns are fluted, while the lower parts are smooth. There are five cross windows arranged in pairs in the first and third bays on both the ground and first floors, some of which retain their original leaded panes, fittings, and pintle hinges. The ground floor windows are set in reset openings. A plaque on the left side commemorates Samuel Fowles, who died in 1906 and was the head keeper of the Hempstead Estate.
Both gables feature parapets, tumbled brickwork, and an eaves platband. At the rear, there is a continuous outshut that has been raised to one and a half storeys, with windows added in the 1980s.
