Description

Vale House is a house dating from around 1600. It is constructed of flint that is variously coursed, knapped, and galletted, with brick headers and brick dressings, and has a pantile roof. The building features a three-cell cross passage plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. There is a two-storey gabled porch located off-centre to the left, made of coursed and galletted flint with a brick mosaic over a brick-capped flint plinth. The porch has an elliptical-headed arch with a treble chamfered brick surround beneath a square-headed relieving arch. The doorway has massive wooden jambs and a ledged battened door with a central rail, designed in a four-centred style. The house has repositioned three-light casement windows, some of which have leaded panes and pintle hinges, while others are late 20th-century aluminium framed double-glazed windows. There are no shafts to the end internal stacks, and a small central stack has been rebuilt. The continuous rear outshut has been raised in late 20th-century brick to form a penthouse of no special interest. Inside, there are large internal stacks at each gable end, with the right stack featuring a circular space for a former staircase to the front. A fireplace is located between the central bay and the cross passage. The roof consists of staggered purlins and collars.
