Description

Flaxmans Farmhouse is a house dating back to the 17th century, with an addition from the 19th century. It is constructed of flint and chert with brick dressings, and has a red and black pantile roof. The house now has a T-shaped plan, originally a three-cell 17th-century design to which a 19th-century wing was added. The east facade is two storeys high and has windows arranged without a regular pattern. A central two-storey gabled projection features a sash window on both the ground and first floors, the ground-floor window set beneath a segmental arch. A gable end stack is present. A southern bay has a 20th-century casement window and a door on the ground floor; a 20th-century casement is set above. The northern bay contains a doorway under a segmental arch and a 20th-century casement in an earlier opening, also under a segmental arch. Two brick buttresses flank the facade, with a 20th-century casement window above. Parapet gables and two gable end stacks are visible.

Inside, the northern room has massive spine and bressumer beams. An 18th-century pine eared architrave surrounds an open fireplace, and a six-panel raised and fielded door is also present. Doors are a mix of 17th-century plank and 18th-century two-panel raised and fielded designs. The roof dates from about 1700, featuring two rows of butt purlins; more recent rafters have been built over the original trusses.
