Description
Strand Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid 17th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of coursed flint with brick dressings and has a pantile roof. The building has a single cell plan, with an 18th-century side addition that more than doubles its length. It stands two storeys tall, with a former attic.
The south facade features three late 20th-century windows with glazing bars, which are set beneath reconstructed rectangular hood moulds and have renewed dressings on the ground floor. To the left, there is a modern doorway beneath a segmental arch. The cottage has an 18th-century dentil cornice and a low-pitched roof from the same period. A surviving 17th-century moulded brick gable corbel can be seen. The eastern gable end has four small windows beneath rectangular hood moulds, two of which have roughly shaped brick mullions, and there is a gable-end stack. Additions to the north and west are not of special interest.
Inside, the principal beams feature ogee and nicked chamfer stops, and the window lintels have similar decoration. There is an original winding stair beside the stack that leads from the first floor to the former attic. On the first floor, there is a 17th-century arched and chamfered fireplace, which has contemporary painted decoration above, featuring Fleur-de-Lys motifs flanking a medallion.
