Description

A barn with an attached stableblock and cattle byres, dating from the mid-18th century for the barn, the early 19th century for the stableblock, and the mid-19th century for the byres. The barn is constructed of red brick, while the other buildings are of flint and brick. All have pantile roofs with coped gables. The barn has double doors facing the yard, and opposing doors in the midstrey, which has a catslide roof. There are various ventilation slits with widely-spaced, round-headed openings internally. The barn’s interior features a 5-bay roof with ties, sub principals at half bays, 3 tiers of butt purlins, and coupled rafters. To the right of the barn is a stableblock with 4 stable doors facing the yard and a blank wall to Back Lane. At the rear of the barn are 2 cattle byres, one of which has a datestone reading WHW 1848 in its end gable. The 5-bay byres are mainly open-fronted to the yard and have simple tie beam truss roofs with vertical struts to the purlins. The farm buildings form part of a good farmstead group at Grove Farm, which was part of the Felbrigg estate from the 17th to the 20th century and demonstrates estate improvement over time, with the mid-19th-century work carried out for William Howe Wyndham.
