Description
No 1, Common Place is a late 15th century building with later alterations. It features a stuccoed timber-frame and a black-glazed pantile roof with gabled ends, rising to three storeys. The second floor has two sashes without glazing bars, while the first floor showcases a late 19th century oriel window supported by brackets. The ground floor consists of an early to mid 19th century shop, complete with a moulded architrave, a narrow fascia, and a cornice.
On the left side, facing Bridewell Street, there is a jettied gable and a jettied first floor, which displays exposed joist ends on a moulded bressummer, supported by four brackets and a carved angle post that holds a dragon beam. The rear wing, also facing Bridewell Street, has a plastered timber-frame and a steep gable-ended pantile roof, rising to two storeys with a jettied first floor. The first floor contains three sashes without glazing bars, while the ground floor has two sashes, the right one featuring three-light glazing bars and panelled shutters. A central panelled door is set within a moulded architrave with panelled reveals. There is also an off-centre brick chimney stack.
