Description
This building is a range of cart lodges and a granary located to the north of Longlands Farmhouse and Cottages, dating from around 1790. It was designed by Samuel Wyatt for the Holkham Estate. The structure is made of yellow Holkham brick, with mathematical tile facing on the granary, and features slated roofs.
The principal range is U-shaped and faces east. The front elevation has a double-width, 7-bay central section flanked by projecting wings with hipped roofs to the north and south. At the corners of the intersecting ranges are three-storey towers topped with pyramidal roofs. The north tower was used as a dwelling, while the south tower contains an upper-floor granary accessed by an internal stone staircase. A circular panel of honeycomb brickwork provides ventilation for the granary, which also features a blind arched opening above it. Plain brick bands mark the floor levels, and the ground floor has a brick-vaulted ceiling.
The projecting wings consist of five bays with arcades of timber posts that define the cart lodges. The granaries above are ventilated by rectangular windows. This complex is part of a distinguished group of buildings on the Holkham Estate, designed by Samuel Wyatt for Thomas Coke.
