Description

The Leicester Square Farm Barn is a large barn dating from 1793, built by Samuel Wyatt for the Holkham Estate. It is constructed of English bond red brick with gault brick dressings and a red pantiled roof. The barn has a two-storey elevation and nine bays. It is notable for its distinctive Neo-Classical style.

The east front has a ground floor plinth. Six honeycomb brick ventilation windows are positioned beneath segmental brick soldier arches, arranged in a single outer bay and paired central bays. A gault brick plat-band forms the sill for six semi-circular, rubbed brick arched Diocletian windows with honeycomb brick ventilation. Three pedimented cart entrances, one at each end, have segmental arches and plastered tympanums. Moulded gault brick cornices and a pediment with lead flashings are present, as is a dentil eaves cornice. The north and south gables were rebuilt in the mid-20th century. A central ridge weathervane is visible.

The west elevation is now largely intact in just the two south-west end bays. A mid-19th century lean-to outshut addition was built to the north, and formerly repeated to the east. The east range forms part of a symmetrical model farm layout.
