Description

The Ostrich Inn is a public house dating from the early 19th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The main structure is built of flint rubble with brick dressings, and has a brick front with Flemish bond, which is white-washed. The roof is tiled with pantiles and has brick-capped gable ends and corbelled eaves. A brick stack is located at the left gabled end.

The building’s layout consists of a two-room plan main building of two storeys to the left (northwest), with a central entrance, and a single-storey service wing at the rear of the left-hand room. To the right, there is a contemporary single-storey range with a two-room plan and a central entrance. In the late 19th century, a rear wing was extended on its inner right-hand side, and a single-storey outshut was built at the backs of the front range. Later in the 20th century, the eaves at the rear of the right-hand range were raised to increase accommodation.

The symmetrical main building has two windows on each floor. It features a central panelled door with a gabled wooden canopy supported by shaped brackets. The ground floor windows are 16-pane sashes and the original versions remain, while the first floor sashes have been replaced with facsimiles. The single-storey range to the right is also symmetrical and has two windows. It has a 20th-century door at the centre and flanking 16-pane sashes; the left-hand sash is original, whilst the right-hand sash is a later facsimile. All windows have 20th-century louvred shutters. The rear of the building features a 19th-century two-light casement window with glazing bars, a brick single-storey outshut, and a single-storey gable-ended wing to the right. The single storey wing to the left has raised eaves.

The interior was not inspected.
