Description
Compton Hall Farmhouse west stable range is a stable building dating from around 1800, attributed to Samuel Wyatt for the Holkham Estate. It is constructed of rubble flint with gault brick dressings and has red pantiled roofs. The stable range is single storey and features multiple bays, with two-storey granary or storage towers at both the north and south ends.
The northern tower has a segmental brick arched cart entrance, with an arched lunette window above that includes glazing bars. The openings are dressed with gault brick, and the building has flat rusticated quoins and corbel coursed eaves with decorative details. The roof is hipped.
The multi-bay system of stables has been altered by later insertions but originally featured three end bays at the north, with a central arched headed door framed in brick rustication, flanked by arched lunette windows that are either blocked and plastered or glazed. There is a corbel coursed eaves cornice with dentils.
At the south end, a hipped block has been converted into a cottage, and the south return forms the end bay of the west screen wall of Compton Hall Farmhouse. The stable range was originally symmetrically balanced with a range on the axis to the east, which has since been demolished.
