Description

Compton Hall Farmhouse, dating from around 1800, is attributed to the architect Samuel Wyatt and was built for the Holkham Estate. The farmhouse is constructed of stucco rendered gault brick and features black glazed pantiled roofs. It stands two storeys high with five windows and serves as the centerpiece of a symmetrical model farm layout.

The south front was refaced in the late 19th century and has an advanced three-bay center flanked by recessed single-bay wings, which were designed for separate occupation as three-bay houses to the east and west. The center features two tripartite windows on the ground floor and two on the first floor, all with late 19th-century plate glass sashes of the same width. The central first-floor window includes two-leaf French doors with single light margins, and all first-floor windows have blind boxes.

A richly detailed late 19th-century doorcase is located centrally, featuring half columns with capitals, margin lights, and a rectangular over-door above a six-panel raised and fielded door. Console brackets support a canopy with Greek detailing and a cast iron balcony from the late 19th century. The outer single ground and first-floor plate glass sashes are complemented by a dentil eaves cornice. The low-pitched hipped roof has two gault brick stacks.

The east and west returns each have central arched-headed fan-light doors. The flanking symmetrical screen walls include a hipped two-storey tower to the east, which was formerly the end bay of a demolished wing to the north, and features a swept wall with a pier and roundel at the east. To the west, the screen ends in a balancing two-storey tower that forms the end bay of the existing stable range.
