Description
The gate, railings, and attached piers and walls in front of the Custom House date from the 18th century and are made of wrought iron. The railings and gate face the High Street and feature square brick piers that have been rebuilt on either side, each topped with a stone ball and an equatorial square slab. Low brick walls with stone coping are attached to the railings, which have square-sectioned pointed ends and decorative scroll work between the bars. The gate is asymmetrically placed to the left and has a semi-circular head that stands proud of the railings, featuring a central twisted finial. The wrought iron gate posts also have scroll work and similar twisted finials. The left pier connects to The Custom House via a high wall. This structure is included for its group value.
