Description
The remains of the Abbey of Saints Mary, Barbara, and Edmund are a significant example of a Cistercian abbey, dedicated in 1249. The structure is built of clunch with ashlar dressings. The south wall of the nave still stands and features two circular clerestory windows, along with part of a third. The eastern window is a quatrefoil design, while the western window is a sexfoil, both of which are moulded and have pierced spandrels within chamfered surrounds. Below the clerestory on the south side, there is a string course that serves as a drip mould for the cloister roof, with the supporting corbels still intact. To the west, there are remains of a vaulted room, likely a narthex, with one springer that features ribs of roll and fillet mouldings. The site is designated as a scheduled ancient monument, County Number 209.
