Description
Village Farmhouse Barn is a barn from the second half of the 18th century, constructed of English bond red brick with a red pantiled roof. It consists of two threshing barns built end to end, with outshuts on the north and south sides. There are two cart entrances on the north side and originally two on the south, all featuring wooden lintels and brick arches. The structure has brick eaves cornices and coped gables.
Inside, the barn has a ten-bay layout with two central semi-circular arched openings on the north and south sides leading to the outshuts, which are now filled in. The roof is also ten bays wide, supported by internal brick pilasters with simple stone imposts, which hold wall posts, struts, tie beams, butt-purlins, and collars. The south outshut includes arched wall niches for the tie-beams of a lean-to roof. Additionally, the southeast cart opening has been replaced with a wider opening from the 20th century. The barn's layout resembles a block plan found in Isaac Ware's Plans for Houghton, published in 1735 and again in 1750.
