Description
The West Lynn War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It is made from Bath stone and is located in the churchyard of St Peter’s Church on St Peter’s Road in West Lynn, Norfolk. The memorial is prominently positioned on the north side of the church, next to the path leading to the church entrance.
It features a Latin cross with an octagonal section, supported by a moulded table collar at the top of the tapering octagonal shaft, which has a moulded foot. This stands on a square plinth and a three-tiered octagonal base. In around 2009, modern slate plaques were added to each face of the plinth.
The original inscription was incised directly into the stone, but it has since been replicated on the incised plaques. The inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 18 // (NAMES) // 1939 – 45 / (NAMES) //."
