Description
The Evercreech War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1920 and altered after the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone, featuring marble name plaques and bronze wreaths.
The memorial is located in the cemetery associated with the parish church of St Peter, which is a Grade I listed building. It can be found beyond the church on the north side of the road leading east from the village centre, and the cemetery was laid out by 1903.
Architecturally, the memorial consists of a simple Neoclassical column adorned with acanthus and lotus leaves at the capital, topped with a ball finial. This column stands on a stepped and moulded square plinth, which is set on a two-stepped platform. Each face of the plinth displays a white marble rectangular tablet, each accompanied by a small bronze wreath above it. The principal face, facing southwest, is inscribed with the words: "IN MEMORY OF/ THE HEROIC MEN/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." The other faces feature tablets inscribed with the names of the fallen. Additionally, below the principal face, there is a smaller tablet that reads: "AND OF THOSE IN/ THE WORLD WAR/ 1939-1945," followed by the names of six men who died in that conflict.
