Description
No. 224 Northgate Street is a house located in Great Yarmouth, dating from the early 18th century. It was extended by one bay to the north in the mid-18th century and features an early 19th-century front extension. The building has been altered in the 20th century and is constructed of rendered brick with pantile and slate roofs.
The house is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The two-storey front extension includes a 20th-century shop front and three late 20th-century first-floor windows. A parapet conceals the sloping slate roof, and there is a shaped gable to the south with a stack. The rear elevations feature a 20th-century ground-floor extension and two 20th-century first-floor casements flanking a doorway. The roof has two pitches, with the lower north pitch representing the 18th-century extension. There is a former internal gable-end stack in the taller section.
Inside, the ground floor has been opened up into a single trading area. It features one chamfered bridging beam with tongue stops, supported by an iron post that was installed when the front extension was added. The cellar contains two chamfered bridging beams. A winder staircase leads to the attic, where a ship's mast has been reused as a newel post. The roof structure includes principals, butt purlins, and collars.
