Description
Nos. 225, 226, and 226A on Northgate Street in Great Yarmouth are a pair of shops with a house in the rear wing, dating from the early 18th century. They were built over a late 14th century wall made of flint and brick and were extended at the front in the early 20th century. The buildings are constructed of brick with some flint, featuring pantile roofs that are black-glazed at the front and made of concrete at the rear.
The structure has two storeys and a dormer attic, with a five-window range. There are two early 20th century plate-glass shop fronts, each with central entrances and curved glass. No. 225 has two late 20th century casement windows on the first floor, while No. 226 has three late 20th century top-hung casements. An arched passageway to Eden Place is located at the right of the elevation. The gabled roof includes one late 20th century dormer on the left and a roof-light on the right, with an internal gable-end stack to the north. The rear has late 20th century details.
The cross-wing is two storeys with a dormer attic, made of whitewashed brick under a pantile roof, featuring late 20th century details such as a door, two ground-floor casements, and two first-floor casements, along with a sloping dormer in the gabled roof.
Inside, No. 225 has a mid-18th century moulded cornice on the ground floor and a cellar that contains parts of the late 14th century wall. The upper floors have not been inspected.
