Description
Nos. 3, 4, and 5 Northgate Street is a range of three shops with accommodation above, now functioning as a single shop. The building dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of colourwashed brick beneath a roof of black-glazed pantiles, with concrete tiles added to the rear in the 20th century. It has two storeys and a dormer attic, featuring a four-window range.
The shop front for Nos. 3 and 4 was updated in the late 20th century, while the corner shop front for No. 5, dating from 1897, includes plate glass display windows and a recessed entrance, along with a prominent fascia board and a canted corner. The first floor is illuminated by a late 20th-century top-hung casement window at No. 3, two paired 1/1 horned sash windows at No. 4, and a 6/6 unhorned sash window at No. 5, which is set within a flush frame facing north. There are also one flat-headed and one segmental-headed dormer on the east side, and a segmental-headed dormer facing north, each with 2/2 sashes. The roof is gabled.
Inside, the ground floor has been modified in the mid to late 20th century and opened up into a single sales floor. The building is included for its group value.
