Description
No. 55 North Quay is a warehouse that was originally a domestic range built in 1748 and converted to a warehouse in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with some flint dressings and features a double-pile plan, with a plain-tile roof on the front pile and corrugated asbestos roof cladding on the rear. It has two storeys and a dormer attic, with a six-window range.
The facade includes a very wide early 20th-century plate-glass shop front with canopy boxes that extend over No. 56. The first floor has knapped and cut flint between the windows and stuccoed brick quoins. The windows are 20th-century sheet glass that have replaced the original sashes. There is a timber eaves cornice beneath the gabled roof, which features two pedimented dormers; the left-hand dormer contains a 3/3 horned sash, while the other dormer has no window.
Internally, there is a truncated gable-end stack to the north. The east pile is made of red brick, and the ground floor has an early 20th-century single-storey flat-topped extension along with a three-storey loading bay that ends in a ruined lucam. The main first-floor wall displays various sashes under gauged skewback arches, and the building has a gabled roof. The interior was not inspected.
