Description
Nos. 20 and 22 Dock Street is a warehouse and workshops built around 1800, with later alterations. The building is made of red brick in English and random bond, topped with a stone slate roof.
No. 20, on the right, is two storeys tall and two windows wide, featuring segmental brick arches. The wall has been patched with later brickwork, and the smaller right-hand window is blocked. It has a segmental-arch doorway with a fanlight and a flush-panelled door, along with a round-headed passageway on the right.
No. 22, on the left, is four storeys high and five windows wide. It consists of a four-window main range with loading doors on the left and a staircase bay that projects forward on the far left. There is an inserted toilet block in between. The main range has segmental brick arches, and the upper two floors have top-hinged small-pane casements. There is a wide doorway on the right with an elliptical brick relieving arch, and a narrow doorway on the left, with loading doors above. The staircase bay is built in English bond with header-brick round arches, lacking sills and featuring flush wood frames. The wall below the lowest sill level is thickened and carries a stone coping.
Inside, the main range on the ground floor has a row of cylindrical cast-iron columns that support a timber floor with tie-bars. The staircase bay contains straight flights of stone stairs. This staircase bay likely also served the range to the left, which was refronted in the mid-20th century.
