Description
17 and 19 Bridge End is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of brick and has been whitewashed, featuring a hipped roof covered in cement tiles and a large central ridge stack. It displays long and short chamfered quoins, and there are four windows with keystones and voussoirs, moulded sills, and sashes with glazing bars in exposed casings. To the left, there are remains of a 19th-century shop window with a Doric pilaster. The left side of the building descends towards the river and has five storeys with three similar sashes. On the right front, there is an added bay that is three storeys tall, with one window and a parapet, as well as a shop window on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected. Two plaques on the building indicate that it served as the meeting place for the 'Band of Hope' temperance movement, which was founded in 1847, and that the first moving film was taken from this location.
