Description

Frettenham Cornmill is a former cornmill built in the mid-19th century, likely around 1880. It features a tapering tarred brick tower with a circular plan and stands five storeys tall. The ground floor has a stable door on the south-east side, along with one horizontal pivot window that includes glazing bars. There are remains of a double door on the first floor, which also has one horizontal pivot window with glazing bars. The second floor contains one gallery door opening and another horizontal pivot window with glazing bars, along with remains of cast-iron gallery bearers and vertical rails. The third floor has one window opening, and the fourth floor includes another horizontal pivot window. The structure retains a complete curb and cast-iron track and rack.

Inside, the mill has a nearly complete set of machinery. The first floor features a wooden clasp arm, a great spur wheel with wooden teeth, and a cast-iron crown wheel with wooden teeth, along with a drive shaft leading to auxiliary machinery that was formerly in an adjoining barn (which is not included in the listing). There are two underdriven stone nuts on this floor. The second floor contains two French burr stones and one runner stone stored on the floor, as well as a wooden chute leading to the first floor. A wooden chamfered drive shaft runs through the second and third floors, and a section of the drive shaft remains on the fourth floor.
