Description
The Church of St. Lawrence is a former parish church that is now redundant. It is a medieval structure that was largely destroyed by fire in 1827. The chancel was rebuilt in 1832 and was used for worship until around 1890. The church is constructed of flint with limestone and brick dressings and features a slate roof. The windows are generally three-light with Perpendicular tracery, and the windows on the north and south sides are separated by staged buttresses with flushwork panels. There is a priest's door with a four-centred arched head located under the center window on the south side. The west end was largely rebuilt in the 19th century and includes a doorway on the south side; above this doorway is a flushwork panel with a shield that has been re-set upside-down. The church has diagonal corner buttresses, and the center window on the north side has been blocked in brick. There is a small three-light east window flanked by two vertical strips of brickwork, which indicate a larger earlier window. The projection of the east wall at low level is protected by a slate roof. The west wall features a re-set three-light Perpendicular window, and the church has an early 19th-century king-post roof.
