Description

Sots Hole Cottage is a cottage, largely of the mid-18th century, though incorporating fragments from the 16th and 17th centuries. The east end is mainly 17th century, the western end 18th century, and the building sits on a 17th-century plinth. It was restored and extended to the west around 1980. The cottage is constructed of flint and brick, with a thatched roof, and has a 1½ storey form, with a single-storey extension to the west. It has three windows facing north, and a single-storey gabled porch, likely from the 19th century. A Diocletian window has been inserted into a previously blocked doorway, and a long 20th-century window has been added. Three two-light 19th-century casement windows are set into wedge-shaped dormers. The east gable wall is of flint and brick, with three 20th-century windows in what were original openings. The building features moulded brick kneelers, a parapet verge, and end stacks. The west gable includes inserted openings for 20th-century casement windows and has brick kneelers, an eaves level platband, a parapet verge, and an end stack. Inside, there are open brick fireplaces. A first-floor fireplace at the east end has a brick basket arch. The ground floor fireplace below it contains a re-used beam with a chamfer and ogee nicked stop. The cottage also features exposed late 17th-century floor joists and bridging beams with ogee stops. The west end has softwood joists, and the roof is a staggered butt purlin roof. The eastern roof is mainly 18th century, but incorporates a pair of upper crucks on the easternmost principal rafter, reminiscent of Ranworth Old Hall.
