Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church built primarily of flint with limestone dressings and slate roofs. It features a 12th-century round west tower topped with a 15th-century brick octagonal stage. The church includes a nave and a former south aisle that are now under one roof, along with a chancel and a south porch. The octagonal tower stage has limestone quoins and an embattled parapet, with two-light sound openings. There is a two-light west window in the base of the tower from the 16th century and an angle buttress at the south-west corner. The south porch has a parapeted gable and angle buttresses, with a quatrefoiled opening above the south doorway. The south door leading into the nave is from the 19th century and features good 15th-century tracery applied to its face. A late 14th-century window is located in the former south aisle, which is now part of the nave. There is an arched opening to a former chapel, which has been partly infilled, and a two-light window with 'Y' tracery. A 19th-century vestry is situated on the south side of the chancel. The chancel windows display 'Y' and intersecting tracery, and there are angle buttresses at the east wall. Inside, there is a notable monument on the south wall, a cartouche dedicated to Margaret Beevor from 1716. The chancel contains brasses commemorating Edward and John Brampton (who died in 1622), Robert Brampton (who died in 1468) and his wife, as well as John Brampton (who died in 1535) and his two wives. The church has 19th-century roofs with king posts in the nave and arch-braced collars. Additionally, there is an octagonal font adorned with shields set in quatrefoils.
