Description

The Bridewell is a house dating from the 17th century, with a date of 1633 marked on the west wall. It is constructed of flint, limestone, and brick, featuring brick dressings. The building has steeply pitched roofs that are both pantiled and plaintiled, and it has an L-shaped plan with one and a half to two storeys. The south wing includes a cellar, which is said to have been a former prison cell.

The south wing has one and a half storeys and features 20th-century casements in altered openings. There is a half-glazed entrance door opposite the stack, with a datestone above it. A gabled dormer contains a two-light casement with glazing bars and pendant brackets on the dormer wallplate. The south gable has three-light casements on both the ground and first floors, along with a blocked attic opening that has an inset stone above, though the inscription is not decipherable.

The northern range is believed to be older and has scattered fenestration to the south, with casements featuring glazing bars, some of which are 20th-century replacements. There are also 20th-century entrance doors, including one in an original chamfered brick opening. A later lean-to is present at the west gable. The gables are parapeted and coped, with moulded eaves that oversail the courses, and there is an internal chimney stack. The eaves line is raised in red brickwork with a dentilled eaves course, and there is a pantiled lean-to on the north side.
