Description
The Tittleshall war memorial is a First World War memorial, unveiled in 1920, with later additions. It has a rectangular shape and is made of grey granite, designed as a Celtic wheeled cross with a tapered shaft, a two-stepped plinth, and a rusticated base. The front (north) side of the plinth is inscribed with ‘FOR THEIR COUNTRY / 1914 – 1919’, followed by the names of 12 individuals who fell in the First World War. Below this, the dates of the Second World War (1939 – 1945) are inscribed, along with the name of one local man who died in that conflict. The west side of the plinth bears the inscription ‘AFGHANISTAN’, along with the name of a local man who fell in 2008. The memorial is surrounded by gravel and is enclosed by eight low timber posts arranged in a rectangular shape, linked by a metal chain. It is prominently located at the junction of Fakenham Road and Heath Lane.
