Description
Woodford Lodge is a former Holkham Estate farmhouse and miller's house, with a core dating back to the 17th century, and later additions and refacing in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The front and side of the building are brick, replacing an earlier timber frame. The roof is covered in black pantile.
The symmetrical front facade has five bays, featuring sash windows with glazing bars set beneath skewback arches. A blind window sits above the central front door, which has a reeded doorcase ornamented with corner paterae and unusual geometric designs. The fanlight above the door is arched and formed from glazing bars. A later open porch has been added. Decorative gault brick dentil cornices run along the building, capped by a hipped roof.
The east gable has two pairs of giant pilasters framing an open porch, semi-circular in plan. This porch is supported by a pair of narrow, fluted Doric columns and pilasters, topped with a fluted frieze and a flat roofed hood. The rear and west walls retain timber framing and a wooden dentil cornice. A central axial stack, likely from the 17th century, and a gable end stack are present on the main block. Extensions to the west and rear of the building were constructed in 1771 and 1778, marked with the initials G.B. on datestones.
