Description

Uphouse Farmhouse in South Raynham is a 17th-century farmhouse with some features dating from around 1800. The building is constructed of flint with stone and brick dressings and has a pantiled roof. The facade was altered around 1800, featuring three tripartite sash windows with glazing bars on both the ground and first floors. There is an off-centre six-panel door with a simple fanlight above it. The ground-floor windows have flat rubbed brick arches, while the first-floor windows have wooden lintels and rubbed brick arches above the door.

The original extent of the house is indicated by stone quoins that mark the southernmost bay. Four central sash windows have replaced earlier brick-dressed casement windows. On the north side, there is a blocked three-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor, with a brick-dressed rectangular window above it that is also blocked. The steeply pitched pantiled roof has two end gables, and the original gable stack is now on the party wall.

At the rear, there are outshuts with two different pitches. The northern outshut features stone quoins, a blocked four-centred arched stone door case with a drip mould, and a stone stairs window with a four-centred arch. Inside, the ground floor includes a room at the north with a spine beam and bressummer beam that are chamfered and stopped, along with other chamfered and stopped beams on both floors. There is an early 18th-century staircase located at the south of the rear outshut, and the original roof has been replaced in the 18th century.
