Description
Numbers 21 (The Gables) and 21A is a mid-19th century maltmaster's house that has been converted into offices. The building is constructed of gault brick and features a roof made of diamond composite slates. It has two storeys and an attic, arranged in seven bays, with the central five bays projecting forward beneath a wide pediment.
The central entrance door has two tall fielded panels and is framed by a doorcase supported by Tuscan columns with reeded and fluted necks, topped with block entablatures and an open pediment. The windows are horned sashes without glazing bars, set under gauged skewback arches. On the first floor, there is an added early 20th-century bay window. The pediment contains a modified Venetian window, featuring an arched center with glazing bars and rectangular blind windows on either side. The building has a gabled roof behind a parapet.
To the left of the main elevation, a pedestrian entrance leads to a single-storey rear wing (The Gables), which is also used as offices. This wing has an open-pedimented doorway and 20th-century casement windows, with a gabled roof covered in black-glazed pantiles.
