Description
This is a late 16th-century house, later refaced in the early 20th century, with a circa 1700 rear wing. The front is brick and rendered timber frame with ashlar and flint detailing to the rear wing, and it has a 20th-century clay tile roof with brick ridge and end stacks. The building is in an L-shape. It is two storeys and has an attic, with a two-window front. A gable faces to the left, with a 6/6 sash window. To the right of the gable is a two-light casement window. The entrance has a reused 18th-century doorcase featuring pilasters, a section of triglyph frieze, and an open pediment. Further to the right are two 6/6 sash windows, and a two-light casement in a mock framed gable. The rear wing has a 10/10 sash window, and 2- and 3-light casement windows, along with two dormers. The walls incorporate numerous carved and moulded pieces of limestone originating from a Romanesque building dating to circa 1140. Internally, the late 16th-century section retains its heavy timber frame and a clasped purlin roof structure with reduced principals. The end bay was largely replaced when the circa 1700 block was added, and the roof structure of this section is largely obscured, but includes wind bracing, with principal rafters that appear to have been cut back in situ. A fine, bolection-moulded chimney-piece is located on the first floor.
