Description

Fen Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1700, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a rendered and whitewashed timber-frame structure, with the left gable-end replaced in stone. The roof is a black pantile catslide with a red brick central ridge and projecting stacks on the right end. The building features a late lobby-entrance type plan, with an axial stack and a contemporary lean-to at the rear. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and has a two-window range of 2/2 horned sashes. The ground floor includes a central 20th-century porch and door, a tripartite sash window to the left, and another window to the right. The ends and rear have 20th-century windows.

Inside, the farmhouse has three bays of timber-frame construction. The principal posts that define the stack bay support tie beams at the level of the attic floor, which is below the wall-plate level. The roof structure remains intact up to the collar level. There is a timber bressumer over a large eastern fireplace, while the western fireplace is blocked. An exposed mid-rail shows holes that pierce through the full width of the beam diagonally, indicating a provision for a pentice roof. The unusual feature of having the tie beams at the level of the attic floor below the wall-plate is noteworthy.
