Description
Mill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1700, with later alterations. It features a colourwashed and rendered timber frame and brick construction, topped with a thatched roof that is currently covered in corrugated sheeting. There are brick stacks located at the center left and on the rear slope of the roof. The layout follows a 3-unit lobby-entry plan and the building stands two storeys high.
On the first floor, there is a four-window range consisting of three 2-light horizontal sliding sash windows and a single-light window to the center left above the door. The ground floor has two 3-light casements and a 4-light casement on the far right. The entrance is marked by a 4-panel door with a pentice hood above. The left end of the farmhouse is clapboarded and features an attic 2-light window, while the right end has a lean-to with a door, casements, and clapboarding. The rear of the building includes a 20th-century two-storey extension with a lean-to, as well as another lean-to that has a single-light and a 2-light horizontal sliding sash window above.
Inside, the farmhouse has chamfered bridging beams and a large wide brick stack with back-to-back fireplaces; one fireplace has a visible bressumer with a later fireplace in front, while the other is blocked. The partition between the two right units has been removed. There is a 19th-century staircase, and the first floor features old floorboards, as well as 2-panel and plank doors, with some tall panel framing visible. Small breaks have been made in the rear framing to access the rear extension. Bridging and other beams are visible on the first floor, and the roof is of the clasped purlin type, likely dating from around 1800, but it appears to reuse some pairs of rafters from an earlier roof. This farmhouse retains its main structure and plan form, along with features such as the horizontal sliding sash windows and the large stack.
